Weather Wisdom - Friday, October 2nd, 2009

By Craig Koplien (WTMJ)

Despite flipping the calendar to the month of October yesterday, we’re still closer to the warmest time of the year than the coldest. But just barely. Our average temperature is dropping quickly each day with the normal high falling from 66 degrees today to 53 at the end of the month.

Snow has fallen in Milwaukee during October, but not very often. The earliest measurable snow on record occurred on October 6th, 1889 when 0.1 inches fell. No one remembers that, but you may remember the second earliest snow. Nine years ago, on October 7th, 2000, Milwaukee picked up 0.2 inches. Interestingly, on that same date 2 years ago, in 2007, we had a record high of 85 degrees. What a fantastic example of just how varied the weather can be in early fall.

The average date of the first measurable snow in Milwaukee is November 14th, although the average date of the first trace (typically flurries) is October 28th. In 1999, we didn’t pick up our first trace of snow until December 5th. That is the latest first trace of snow on record.
