It’s the middle of summer. Statistically speaking, that is. Today is about the day that average temperatures peak in southern Wisconsin. Milwaukee’s average high for today is 82 degrees and the average low is 64. Our averages have been near these numbers for a few days now, and will continue for a few more. Today is roughly the middle of the stretch of days in which these numbers peak, so we can reasonable call it the middle of summer.

Obviously, the biggest story that has developed about this summer’s weather is the lack of hot and humid conditions. Yes, we had that stretch of real warm and muggy weather in late June, but that has been about it. I’m sure those of you with air conditioners appreciate the fact that the electric bill, like the temperatures, has been running below average.

So what’s in store for the second half of the summer? Well, there’s tremendous uncertainty in any long-term outlook. That said, the latest word from the Climate Prediction Center indicates there’s a significantly higher chance that August temperatures will be below average than above. And more than that, the outlook indicates a higher chance that temperatures will be below normal for the 3-month stretch of August-September-October.
