Weather Wisdom Sunday June 14, 2009

By Brian Gotter

The big story so far this spring is the cool weather…we are running about 8 degrees below normal for the month of June. Many of you are wondering if summer will ever arrive and the simple answer is yes; one week from today when astronomical summer begins. There is still hope, but the bad news is that next Sunday is the day with the most daylight. After that, we start losing a few minutes of daylight each week. With all this cool weather, severe weather has been almost nonexistent this season. Last Monday’s outbreak was the first severe weather of the spring. Monday’s storm sounded the tornado sirens for Waukesha, Milwaukee and Racine counties. Wind damage was mainly reported in Whitewater and Mukwonago and the National Weather Service said some of that damage was a result of a brief and weak F0 tornado with winds near 65 mph. It formed one mile SW of Mukwonago and skipped along the countryside for about 2 miles. It was wrapped in rain and invisible. The tornado was the first in the state this season. Wisconsin averages 21 tornadoes every year and June is the peak month for tornadoes with more than 400 since 1844. Last June was very stormy and the state experienced 20 tornadoes in June alone and 38 for the year. The fewest tornadoes in a year since 1980 is 7 in 1995.
