I was asked the other day why it seems like the biggest tornadoes always hit late at night. While I do agree that it might seem that way, that’s not the case. In fact, the most favored time for tornadoes, big or small, is during the afternoon. More specifically, the most probable hour for tornado initiation in Wisconsin is 6-7pm.

Nevertheless, it may indeed seem like the biggest tornadoes do occur late at night. I believe this is because tornadoes that strike populated areas around or after Midnight are so often deadly. When tornadoes take lives, they get talked about more on the news, in the community, and they have their anniversaries recalled year after year. So they stand out and are more memorable.

The reason late night tornadoes are so often deadly? Most people are sleeping. It’s a simple as that.

Like tornadoes that hit late at night, tornadoes that strike mobile home parks are too often deadly. I’ve heard it asked whether mobile homes actually “attract” tornadoes. That is very much not true. What is true, however, is that if you are in a mobile home that takes a direct hit from a tornado, your chances for survival are slim. We hear more about tornadoes hitting mobile home parks because injuries and deaths are so probable.
