Weather Wisdom - Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

By John Malan

The storm system that dropped wintry weather in central and north central Wisconsin overnight and a rain-sleet combination to southeast Wisconsin will keep clouds and warmer conditions in the state through tomorrow. Temperatures will rise into the mid-forties on Wednesday and low-fifties on Thursday. The temperatures will drop again on Friday and Saturday as the roller coaster autumn temperature pattern continues across the state. Winter Awareness week continues and today we cover the type of weather that is found mainly during the colder part of the year in Wisconsin. The type of weather that causes hazardous conditions include light to moderate snowfall that create slippery roads and heavy snows that make travel dangerous. Blizzards can be deadly if you are caught outdoors for an extended period of time or stranded on impassable roads. Ground blizzards can be especially dangerous to travelers and recreationalists on snow mobiles or ATV vehicles. Ice storms and glazing is extremely difficult to drive on and can cause tragic accidents with injuries and fatalities. One of the biggest killer weather parameters on this planet is cold air. Thousands of people die on this planet each year directly and indirectly related to extremely low temperatures and wind chills. In tomorrow’s column I will talk about dressing properly for bitterly cold temperatures and preparing for the winter season.
