Weather Wisdom - Thursday, November 13, 2008
John Malan
The clouds will stick around on Thursday in most of Wisconsin but temperatures will jump into the low-fifties across the Milwaukee area. There is still a chance for a few rain showers across the state and mainly in the afternoon for the Milwaukee and southeast Wisconsin. Colder air will return to the state for the coming weekend.
Today’s Winter Awareness week topic is preparing and dressing for the winter season. Proper clothing in extreme cold, snow and wind can keep you from experiencing dangerous hypothermia and frostbite conditions. You should wear multiple layers of light-weight, loose fitting and warm fabric clothing. The air you trap in these layers adds insulation, and you can always remove layers if needed to avoid heavy perspiration and subsequent chills. Try to wear water repellent and hooded outer garments. Remember to always cover your head with a hat, hood or at least, ear muffs since you can loose half your body heat through an uncovered head.
Automobile accidents are a big part of winter weather hazards in Wisconsin. Make sure your car is in good shape before winter and slow down when the snow starts to fall. An emergency car kit should include booster cables, a shovel, sand, a flashlight, matches, a first aid kit, some water for drinking and blankets or extra clothing for warmth.
