Weather Wisdom - Thursday, October 2nd, 2008
John Malan
The cool weather will continue today and tomorrow before slightly warmer temperatures move back to southeast Wisconsin this weekend. Clouds will also be a problem at times along with a few afternoon isolated light showers or sprinkles. Clearing skies in some areas of southern Wisconsin Thursday and Friday night could bring the first frost of the season to areas of southern Wisconsin well away from Lake Michigan.
The average occurrence of the first 32 degree temperature or lower in autumn for areas of southern Wisconsin away from Lake Michigan to about the Madison area is around October 4th through the 10th depending upon exact location. The closer to the lakeshore you travel the more delayed the first occurrence of freezing temperatures. In areas of Sheboygan, Ozaukee and southern lakeshore counties down to Kenosha the average first occurrence is about a week later, from the 11th to the 17th. In Milwaukee the official average occurrence of the first frost is around October 20th.
Many places in Wisconsin are past the average date of the first frost, which includes the areas of northern Wisconsin from Wausau and Eau Claire northward to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This week is the average week for places just north of Green Bay and south of Wausau like Stevens Point and then west to La Crosse.
