Weather Wisdom - Tuesday, September 30th, 2008
John Malan
The last day of September will be cool as northwest winds continue to bring in Canadian air to most of the state. There is still a chance for some light rain showers scattered through the area but the real weather story is the much cooler conditions than the summer-like weather we were enjoying last week. While this month started out like a lamb in Milwaukee with some of the warmest temperatures of the whole summer season, it will certainly go out like a lion with high temperatures barely reaching sixty degrees for the remainder of the week.
September will go down in the record books as warm and wet although the last few days might make you rethink that statement. The month was a real roller coaster with a high of 89 degrees on the 2nd, the warmest for the month and the whole summer season. The average monthly temperature was just over 65.5 degrees which puts this month about two degrees above average.
Precipitation for this month was above average also with just over four inches, well above the September average of 3.30 inches for Milwaukee. The rainfall was beneficial as lawns were getting brown after the mini-drought of August, but the remnant rainfalls from Hurricane Ike and Gustav on the 4th and 14th finally greened up the vegetation.
