MILWAUKEE - A slowdown in sales at Summerfest: vendors say they’re having a tough time moving product this year.

Food vendors, souvenir sales, T-shirts…many of them say the cash registers just are not ringing like they should.

One Waukesha based vendor has hair extensions to fit any woman’s taste. What Gift Works Plus is low on: customers.

“Normally it’s wall to wall people. I feel there’s a lot of space between the groups and a lot of people aren’t shopping,” Kris Karrels said.

First time vendor Catalina Lacen brought leather goods all the way from Texas.

“People are tight with their money,” Lacen said.

Shoppers are not really interested in her custom $150 purses, but she says they will spend $10.

“I’m a little disappointed that they’re buying more of the really cheesy made in China things,” Lacen said.

There’s some pretty neat stuff at Summerfest: a vest that’s also a backpack and purses made out of magazine covers, but vendors say people are doing more browsing than buying.

“This is what you call your luxury, fun time things, not your necessities so you watch what you’re going to spend,” Shopper Edie Seekamp said.

At Air Chairs booth, salesmen are doing more sitting than selling.

“We’ve got big returns at that moment two years ago, but this year we’re really struggling,” Robert Waite said.

Summerfest officials said they were not aware that these businesses are having a tough time this year.
