DO YOU OWE TED AN APOLOGY?
By Lance Allan
I remember taking the calls in the sports office.
What is #&^%% Ted Thompson doing? He's ruining Favre's last stand!
Why isn't he trading for Randy Moss?
Why is he letting free agents go, and not picking and signing more free agents?
Well, it might have taken two years...but now we know why. The man knows how to evaluate talent, and that's why Bob Harlan, in one of his final acts, locked up the Packers GM for five more years so other teams wouldn't try to steal him away.
For concrete evidence, 40 of the 53 players on the roster were obtained by Thompson. Now that being said, some key players, like Favre, Driver and Kampman were picked up by either Ron Wolf or Mike Sherman...but Thompson has rebuilt this team from the ground up. Ron Wolf always taught me that a team really improves by upgrading the bottom end of the roster, and you see it with special teams.
Talent evaluation is a tough animal. I still think Thompson should have found a way to keep Mike Wahle, with all of the problems the Packers have had at guard. And I think a veteran running back Ryan Grant would have been huge this time of the year, especially if something happened to Grant.
But I was always on record as saying this team didn't need Randy Moss. It would have stunted the development of Greg Jennings...and probably caused more problems than it was worth.
So Ted, when you open your mail...you just might have a few apology letters to go through.
