UW Seniors Prep for Last Home Game

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- With no Big Ten games left, Wisconsin will try to pad its record before the postseason.

The Badgers send off 16 seniors Saturday, but won't have to worry about getting a sixth win against Cal Poly to reach bowl eligibility.

Wisconsin reached that mark with a 35-32 win over Minnesota on Saturday to improve to 6-5 and finish its Big Ten season a disappointing 3-5. The Mustangs are ranked No. 3 in the nation in the FCS and preparing themselves for the FCS playoffs, the one that invites 16 teams and settles it on the field.

Cal Poly (8-1) runs an option attack that Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema said Monday is unlike anything the Badgers have seen, but the focus will be on Wisconsin's seniors and one final game at Camp Randall Stadium.

"Our players have been very vocal," Bielema said. "They just have a different perspective as the games wind down and after things have happened a certain way. I know it's important for them to say in their playing days they kept the Axe for the four years they were here at the end of their careers. The same thing can be said for this weekend. It's Senior Day, there's going to be a lot of special people in their lives that are here to recognize that."

Bielema said being bowl eligible is big for the program, which had high hopes derailed by a four-game Big Ten conference losing streak.

"It means a lot. This is the seventh year in a row we'll be bowl eligible. That's No. 2 longest in the Big Ten. Ohio State has the longest at eight and it says a lot about your program, being able to sustain things for a long time," Bielema said.

Wisconsin, with a 19-game winning streak against non-conference opponents in the regular season, has a spate of nagging injuries to deal with before a long break before a potential bowl game. All three running backs -- P.J. Hill, John Clay and Zach Brown -- are banged up. Brown was the only one who didn't play against Minnesota.

"The Illinois game (he) got a shot to the ribs and was bruised up a little bit," Bielema said. "He battled through it, but re-aggravated it last week at Indiana's game. Didn't have him practice at all this week and really we're trying to get him to a game-time decision and he still at game time he wasn't feeling comfortable."

Bielema also said they'll know more about receiver Kyle Jefferson after tests later in the week, but it's unlikely that he'll play against the Mustangs.

Jefferson was taken off the field in an ambulance after a hit left him motionless for several minutes in the second quarter of Saturday's game against Minnesota. He was later diagnosed with a concussion.
