(AP) -- Cody Strang is one of the top prep athletes in the state of Wisconsin, but the modest Madison Edgewood senior golfer prefers not to think that way. "There are times I don't even think I'm one of the best players in the area," said Strang, a University of Wisconsin hockey recruit. "But if I play good rounds, I can play with anyone." Strang certainly proved that on Tuesday at University Ridge Golf Course. He carded a final-round, 2-under-par 70 for a two-round total of even-par 144 to win the WIAA Division 2 state boys golf tournament. The victory makes him the first back-to-back Division 2 champion since New Richmond's Chad Kovaleski accomplished the feat in 1999 and 2000. Strang, the state's reigning Mr. Hockey award winner, beat out Edgerton junior Dan Ozga (76, 147) by three strokes and also led the Crusaders to the school's first state boys WIAA golf title. Edgewood rallied with a final-round 300 -- including a 2-over 146 on the back nine -- to bury the competition with a Division 2 record team score of 611. McFarland, which finished sixth at 666 Tuesday, set the previous record of 613 when it captured the 2004 title. Green Bay Notre Dame (317, 632) placed second and Appleton Xavier (328, 636) finished third. All of Edgewood's scoring golfers -- including seniors Michael Murphy (78, 155) and Shane Sweeney (77, 155) and sophomore Kevin Curliss (75, 157) -- finished in the top-10 individually. Edgewood's win gave the boys a trophy to put next to the row of hardware its girls' golf team has accumulated in recent years. The Edgewood girls have won eight straight state titles. "Yeah, I get a lot of (guff) from my friends," Murphy said. "Just stuff about how we can't beat the girls team and stuff like that." Strang knocked in a bunker shot from 15 yards out to birdie the 10th hole. He made seven pars before sinking a 40-footer for birdie on the 18th, ending his high school career in championship fashion. "I never thought I'd win even one," Strang said. "So two and a team title is more than I could ever ask for." In the Division 3 state tournament, Manitowoc Roncalli took the title with a 647 for the tournament, eight strokes better than Cambridge. Roncalli led throughout, with seniors Anthony Nett (161) and Tim Denk (162) leading the way. "Overall, we have a deep team and it showed," Roncalli coach John Haug said. "Cambridge is a tough team and I'm just glad that we made enough putts to get by them." Senior Sam Jeffery finished with 167, helping Cambridge to its best finish in school history. "It's not what we wanted to leave with," Jeffery said, "but it's a good consolation prize. Better to take second and a trophy home than to take third, with nothing to show for it like last year." Defending champion Jake Nelson of Ladysmith carded a 1-over 73 and a 147 total to win another individual title. He became the first two-time champion in Division 3 since 1999, when Glenwood City's Jeremy Lyons won the last of his three titles. "Hitting greens and making putts were big for me," Nelson said. "I hit five more greens in regulation and my long putts were close enough for me to tap in. Making it to state all four years, especially my senior year, is quite an accomplishment." ------ Information from: Wisconsin State Journal, http://www.madison.com/wsj (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press.
