WIAA Girls Golf Day One

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Any questions about whether Madison Edgewood has what it takes to win an eighth straight WIAA state girls golf championship were answered during Monday's first round at University Ridge Golf Course.

All five Edgewood golfers broke 90, led by University of Wisconsin recruit Alyssa Elliott's 76, as the Crusaders shot a 314 and took a 49-stroke lead over Arcadia-Cochrane Fountain City in the Division 2 team competition.

Edgewood's score was just 3 strokes off its meet record of 311 set in the first round last year.

Elliott was alone in fourth place, 5 shots behind first-round leader Lindsay Danielson of Osceola.

Danielson, trying to become the first girl to win four WIAA state golf titles, shot 71 and had a 3-stoke lead on Edgerton's Allyssa Ferrell, who tied for third in Division 1 last season.

Edgewood's Alex Lake and C.J. Enriquez were tied for fourth with 77s.

The Crusaders would have to shoot 320 or lower in today's final round to break their 36-hole state tournament record of 634 also set last year when they won by 61 shots.

In Division 1, defending state champion Green Bay Notre Dame shot 320 and took a 2-stroke lead on Mequon Homestead. Erin Sharpee (76), Jennifer Konop (77) and Gaby Ruanova (78) led the way for the Tritons, who won last year's title by nine shots over Onalaska.

Glendale Nicolet's Tory Bauman opened with a 70 in her bid for a second straight individual state title. She leads Kettle Moraine's Jackie Shepherd by 5 shots.

Tuesday's final round begins at 8 a.m.
