DSHA among quarterfinal winners at state meet
MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Goals by Meghan Flannery and Kelly Gehringer carried Divine Savior Holy Angels to a 2-0 victory over Appleton North in Division 1 quarterfinals of the state high school girls soccer tournament in Milwaukee today.
Divine Savior (23-1-1) advances to tomorrow's semifinals against Brookfield East (18-1-4), which beat Eau Claire Memorial 3-0 in another quarterfinal.
The other semifinal match has Waunakee (22-2-1) facing Bay Port (19-1-4). Waunakee beat Waukesha West 3-1 and Bay Port topped Kenosha Bradford 1-0 in quarterfinals.
Divine Savior took a 1-0 lead over Appleton North when Flannery scored off an assist by Lauren Handzlik in the first period. Gehringer's goal off an assist by Kelly McBride came in the second half.
A pair of first-period goals, one unassisted by Kate O'Brien and the other by Alex Piercy off an assist by Rebakah Roller, gave Brookfield East a 2-0 lead, and Britta Munzenmeier added an unassisted goal in the quarterfinal win over Eau Claire Memorial.
Waunakee built a 3-0 lead on goals by Kara Dahmen, Shyla Gilbertson and Melanie Meier before Sarah Joost got Waukesha West's lone goal late in their quarterfinal match.
Bay Port's Caitlin Glendenning scored the only goal, off an assist by Paige Legate, in the win over Kenosha Bradford.
