Racine St. Cat's Advances to Finals

By Rick Rietbrock

Racine St. Catherine's 50, Eau Claire Regis 35 MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Patrick Souter received the ultimate compliment after leading Racine St. Catherine's to a convincing 50-35 victory over Eau Claire Regis in Thursday's Division 3 semifinals of the WIAA State Boys Basketball Tournament. "Basically, he's the one who beat us," Regis coach Williem Uelman said of Souter, who scored a personal best 21 points and made six straight free throws down the stretch to avoid a comeback bid by the Ramblers (19-6). The Angels (22-4), state Division 2 champion in 2005 and the winner in Division 3 last year, face undefeated La Crosse Aquinas (26-0) in the title game at 6:35 p.m. Saturday. Souter got some help from fellow starters Javar Lawson (9 points), James Haarsma (7), Joe Westrich (6) and Jake Thomas (5). They scored all but two of the team's points and Haarsma pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds to offset a 2-for-15 shooting performance. Killian Murphy scored 12 points, and Dwayne Gruhlke added 10 for Regis. Both teams struggled on offense in the first half as the Angels built a 20-13 lead by hitting five 3-pointers. After a free throw by James Haarsma of St. Catherine's with 1:33 left in the second quarter, the Ramblers held the ball for the final shot. Racine coach Bob Letsch said his team came out prepared to face a 2-3 zone. "I felt we had to come out and get them out of the zone," he said. "If you don't hit your shots against the zone, it could be a long morning." It wasn't, thanks to early success from long range -- their first three field goals were 3-pointers in taking a 9-2 lead. That, combined with a strong defensive effort that limited Regis to 22 percent (10-for-46), made for a long outing for Regis. "We had trouble finding the basket," Uelman said. "It was our inability to convert." It was 35-24 after three quarters, highlighted by a 10-2 run that started with a 3-pointer by Westrich and finished with another by Lawson. The Angels won despite shooting 38 percent (15-40). But they had a 38-25 edge in rebounds. "They play great defense," Letsch said of his team. "The defensive rebounding has gotten us here." Plus a little offense. "Every time we made a little run," Murphy said, "they made a better run." (Copyright 2007 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
