Coach Resigns After Kissing Former Student
Michael George
UNION GROVE - The head coach for the Union Grove High School football team has resigned after admitting to kissing an 18-year old former student.
No one is debating what took place in the high school's weight room. Former football and track coach Jeff Urban says it was "just one kiss". It happened over the summer between Urban and an 18-year old girl who had recently graduated. She was on the track team during Urban's time as coach.
Urban initially told school officials investigating the incident that there was no kiss, but he later approached them and admitted that one kiss took place.
"I think he's the leader of morals, that's part of what you're doing as a teacher. It's probably not right, he's married," said John Hagen, parent of a Union Grove football player.
A student heard the story and told her mother. The parent called the school district, and they suspended Urban for 10 days and he resigned as football coach. He had resigned as track coach prior to the incident.
Urban still teaches physical education at the school.
He gave a statement to TODAY'S TMJ4 reading, "I made a mistake, and I have taken full responsibility for what happened. Even though the incident lasted less than 5 seconds, I understand how much I hurt my wife, our families, and our friends. I let down not only the students and athletes at Union Grove, but the entire community - and for this I am truly sorry. I have no excuse for what I did; I can only hope and pray that those close to me will realize that this does not define who I am as a person and that they will be able to give me a second chance."
Some parents told TODAY'S TMJ4 reporter Michael George that they want Urban back as coach. They say he is a good man who just made a mistake.
The school district found no other proof that anything else happened between them. The football team has a new coach now, and some parents say that's the right call.
"If everything I heard was true, then I think that's more than adequate. 10 days off, loss of pay, I think that was the right decision," Hagen said.
No crime was committed, because the former student was 18-years old at the time. The school district considers the investigation closed.
