Local SportsWhitewater Wheelchair Basketball Athletes Headed To Paralympics
WHITEWATER - The 2008 summer Olympics are a distant memory, but the Paralympics games are just getting started!
The Paralympics torch is now in the city and competition begins Saturday.
Many athletes from Wisconsin are participating in the Paralympics, including some guys who have awesome skills on the hardwood.
TODAY’S TMJ4’s Lance Allan” You have USA on the front of your jersey. That's gotta be pretty cool.”
“We put a lot of time into it, and being a member of the team is definitely one of the rewards that comes with it,” Jeremy Lade said.
“All the people back home think it's cool,” Matt Lesperance said.
Lance Allan: “Are you the Toast of Coleman?”
“Yeah, I’m the talk of the town right now,” Lesperance said.
Whitewater residents Lade and Lesperance will help guide the USA wheelchair basketball team into China for the Paralympics games.
“I think it's kinda foolish not expecting to win gold. If we play the best we can, we have the potential to win gold,” Lade said.
This game requires precision.
“There's a lot of strategy....chair position. This game is a matter of inches. If you miss by a couple inches, it will cost you,” Lesperance said.
And sacrifice...
“It's very similar to being on an all-star team, and all 12 guys are used to being the guy on their team, and we have to find that happy medium,” Lade said.
From Whitewater to Beijing, these guys are proud to represent their country.
“I’d be a little disappointed if we didn't get gold, but it's a true honor to represent your country,” Lesperance said.
While these guys will be favorites to win gold, they're used to playing in front of a couple thousand people. In China, more than 20,000 will be courtside.
But watching these guys, makes the jaw of any fan drop.
“Once they see the game, they stop seeing the wheelchair and seeing the game for what it really is, and that's really exciting,” Lade said.
