Can "Mania Mania" Sweep Beijing?

Local Swimmer Tries to Land a Spot on Team USA

By Rick Rietbrock

His name is a little difficult. "It's Mania, manya or even mannea, " says Adam Mania. Since his name - Adam Mania (pronounced MON-ya) looks like "Adammania", most never get it right. TODAY'S TMJ4's Lance Allan asked him, since there's a hulkamania, is there Adam Mania running wild? "Actually everybody just calls me Mania," says Adam. "No one calls me by my first name. Even my parents." The son of Polish immigrants, Adam could have done the easy thing and tried to qualify for Poland, but he wants a challenge, going for Team USA. "Why settle when you can try to go for being the best of the best, says Mania. Adam is the American dream. His parents fled comunist Poland for quiet Nebraska. "They were refugees, and had to pretend they were married," says Mania. "They were thrown into Lincoln, Nebraska because that's where there was a host family." Yet Adam still carries his Polish heritage. After speaking in Polish, Adam translates it: "I live in Milwaukee now and I'm loving it." Mania trains for the 100- and 200-meter backstroke at the Schroeder Y and hols 13 pool records. But he dreams of honoring the sacrifice of his parents all those years ago, by winning Gold. "It would be unbelievable," says Adam. "I'd be a teary mess. Hopefully, they would be there and the first people I would run up and hug would be my parents." Todaystmj4.com will feature live streaming of some swimming events. Check back here when the trials begin this weekend.
