One of the biggest stories of the olympics involves swimming suits. It was made with the help of NASA engineers. It has special heat-bonded seams and a slippery surface to help athletes go faster. This new swimming suit is causing quite a controversy in the swimming world. It's like a wetsuit and it's causing times to fall at a very rapid pace. "Since february of this year, 38 world records have fallen in this suit," says University of Wisconsin swimming coach Eric Hansen. But some feel it's like steroids... An unfair advantage that takes away from the human element. The beauty of our sport has always been fitness, strength, athleticism and lack of equipment," says Hansen. "It's gone away from that a bit and that's a bit sad." Most of the swimmers at the Olympic trials wore the suit. But there are problems, like a zipper. "Is the zipper going to bust which it does quite a bit," says Hansen. " It happened to michael phelps a few weeks ago and it's going to continue to happen. The more complex it gets the more variables there are. " Now that speedo has this suit out, others are scrambling to catch up. "There's probably 5 different one on the market no, 5 different manufacturers so it's who can one-up the other one," he says. The United States will be the favorite no matter what everyone is wearing. "I think we had, with basic suits, fitness and talent," says Hansen. "i think we could have really shown our stuff but even with the suits i think we'll have a really great Olympics and win the medal count." Whether or not the suit suits you, it looks like it's here to stay. The new suit costs 550 dollars.. In the past you could get a racing suit for only 25-dollars. Many amateur athletes will have to pay for it on their own.
