Local Boxer Has Olympic Dreams

Sherard Ranked 5th in the Nation

By Rick Rietbrock

He's a local star on the rise. Andre Sherard has been boxing since he's been 5 years old. Right now he's one of the best in the world and don't be surprised if you see him boxing in the Beijing Olympics. Take a look now folks, this young 18 year old boxer from Milwaukee, maybe the cities best hope for a gold medal in the Bejing in 2008. It's the first one that I've ever been with that's been this quick," says Professional Trainer Donnie Pedelton. "I've seen alot of things on TV, look quick but he's quick in person and he dangerous you know. Smart very skillfull can fight either way adopt any style and can bang, he can bang!" Andre Sherard has been boxing since he's been 5 year's old, this graduate from Bradley Tech currently is ranked 5th in the nation. Rod Burks asks "Your 5th in nation and you just got out of high school how do you not let that go to your head how do you keep focused and keep on the track?" "Because i'm 5th in the nation and i'm not number 1 in the nation," says Sherard. "So that means I still have work to do so i just used that as motivation and just still come down the gym so I can be number 1!" He well could be on his way. Sherard trains hard, how about 6 days a week, 3 hours a day... at Martin Luther King Center. He can thank his dad for his rise pops travel up 800 miles, just so his kid can box. "We would travel up and down the high way so that these guys can get some exposore boxing because it was illegal for them to fight in the state of Wisconsin," says father Andre Sherard. "You had to be 14 years of age. other kids were fighting at 8 so when they would they would go to major tournnaments. They would only have a few fights while the other kids would have 25 30 fights." All that travel and hard work has paid off...Sherard has a record 50 and 8 as an amateur boxer. and he's all ready won the under 19 national title.next up the Colorado Springs for olympic training this week. "The Olympics man what's that mean to you?" asks Rod Burks. "That means a lot it means success, cause I don't believe that nobody has come out Milwuakee that ever won the gold medal before," says Sherard. "So I'd probably be the first to do that if i get there and it's always been a life long dream so if I do get there that would be good enough for me just even getting there but winning the gold medal would be better do you dream about it do you dream about sometimes at night, I think about it all the time that's the main reason come down here because it keeps me focused on the gold medal." And if he get's there don't get against him. "I think he's capable of winning the whole thing simply because the Olympic boxing system is based on the computer system you know were they count punches, says head trainer Stan Johnson. "And this guy's got the best foot and hand speed in the world you know what I mean they ain't going to see nothing like there going to see in Beijing like they're going to see in this kid." So, Rod asks Sherard if he thinks he can whup him. "I hate to say but when comes to these hands if you put it on me I will have to send you down," laughs Sherard. . "I don't think it would last the whole first round."
