La Crosse Aquinas 51, Manitowoc Roncalli 41

By Jenn Rourke

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Scott Christopherson showed why he's a Division 1 recruit. The Marquette-bound senior guard scored 28 points Thursday to lead La Crosse Aquinas to a 51-41 victory over Manitowoc Roncalli in a match of the state's last two unbeatens in the Division 3 semifinals of the WIAA State Boys Basketball Tournament. Luke Umberger added 11 points for the top-ranked Aquinas (26-0), who won the Division 2 state title in 2003. Before joining the WIAA, they won nine WISAA state championships and were runners up 11 times. Greg Schrimpf scored 13 points and Cody Lassila had 11 for the second-ranked Jets (25-1), who hadn't lost since falling to Racine St. Catherine's in last year's state semifinals. They are 73-5 over the last three seasons. "We didn't necessarily shoot the ball as well as we have, but our defense was able to get the job done," said Christopherson, who was 10-for-25 from the field, including 2-for-8 on 3-pointers. "I thought our defense was very strong," Aquinas coach Rick Schneider said. Christopherson, who averages 22 points, hit back-to-back shots to spark an 11-2 run to close the second quarter and create a tie at 24. He had 14 points in the first half, all of which were needed to offset the production of Schrimpf (10 points) and Stephen Dudek, who had six points on three lay-ups to help the Jets build a 22-13 lead with 5:37 left in the second quarter. Dudek was on the floor, having turned an ankle, just as the buzzer sounded to end the first half. He was helped to his feet and returned to start the second half, but didn't score again. "We knew it was going to be a defensive battle," Aquinas coach Rick Schneider said. His team quickly jumped in front in the third quarter on baskets by Umberger and Steve Papke. After Roncalli tied it at 28, the Blugolds scored the final six points of the third quarter to lead 34-28. The Blugolds' lead was cut to 41-39 in the fourth quarter before they closed with a 10-2 run. "Obviously, Christopherson's a load to handle," Roncalli coach Joe Rux said. "He's a great player. "One of our goals was to make him have to beat us alone. We wanted him to have to make tough shots and he made those shots." (Copyright 2007 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
