Girls'State Basketball Tourney: Flambeau 40, Wausau Newman 37

By Jenn Rourke

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Flambeau's bid for a second straight state championship is alive. Susan Bischoff scored 10 points and had nine rebounds to lead the Falcons to a 40-37 victory over Wausau Newman Catholic on Friday morning in the Division 4 semifinals of the WIAA State High School Girls Basketball Tournament. Bischoff, the only player in double figures for the Falcons (25-1), also defended on the game-tying shot in the final minute, when Newman's Val Schuster had the ball inside. "I was scared," Bischoff said, "but I had a lot of help on the backside. It wasn't just me." The score at the time was 39-37 and, following the miss by Schuster, freshman Courtney Wanish hit a free throw with 19 seconds to play. The Falcons had a chance to tie, but a 3-point try went awry and a final shot at the buzzer would have resulted in only two points. "To coin an NCAA phrase, there's no freshmen now," Flambeau coach Ted Alberson said, referring to Wanish, who had seven points and made three of four free throws in the final 1:03. In a rematch of last year's title game, won 44-31 by Flambeau, the Falcons displayed several styles, including a slowdown in the first quarter with a 9-4 lead. But a steal and subsequent layup by Newman Catholic (20-5) picked up the tempo as Flambeau built a nine-point lead. Two field goals in the final 41 seconds, the second at the buzzer, by Alex Hollis lifted the Fighting Cardinals to 19-16 at halftime. The teams combined for 29 turnovers in the first half, 16 by Newman. But Newman had only two turnovers in the second half and Flambeau had four. "We had some untimely turnovers, a lot of them," Newman coach Tom Weinkauf said. Flambeau, which defeated Newman 47-43 in overtime on Feb. 9, opened the second half with a 12-2 run, including 3-pointers by Beth Alberson and Krista Crabb. But the 31-18 lead disintegrated. The Cardinals shut out the Falcons the rest of the quarter and closed to 31-26, setting the stage for a frantic final eight minutes. A surprising intentional foul call helped Newman score three points to make it 39-37 with 35 seconds left. A free throw by Hollis and a layup on the ensuing possession by Stacy Holmberg created excitement, but Wanish's three free throws sealed Flambeau's victory. Schuster's 13 points led Newman, which had hoped for a different finish this year. "I don't know if we wanted to talk revenge," Weinkauf said, "but there certainly was a lot of incentive." Likewise for Alberson, who had a hired hand working on his farm back home. "I didn't want to go home and milk cows," he said, then laughed. Instead, he'll stay in Madison with hopes of another state championship. (Copyright 2007 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
