'09 Brewers: The Relievers
Next game: Wednesday, April 8th at San Francisco
Brewers Gameday with the Jockey Pregame Show at 8:30 p.m. on Newsradio 620 WTMJ
In 2008, the Brewers' bullpen turned into their achilles heel.
They blew 26 saves in that season, fifth in the National League.
Eric Gagne, Guillermo Mota, Salomon Torres and Derrick Turnbow - the chief culprits in the bullpen failures - are all gone. So is Brian Shouse, one of the few bullpen stalwarts from last year.
The Brewers hope all-time saves leader Trevor Hoffman fills the hole by all those departures, and outperforms them all combined.

Vitals |
2008 |
Synopsis |
| Todd Coffey #60 |
RHP
6-5, 240
Age: 29 |
1-0, 4.39 ERA, 15 K, 8 BB |
Sorgi: There's only 7 1/3 innings of tenure to go on when it comes to his Milwaukee career, but he didn't give up a run or a walk in his time in Milwaukee. There's certainly promise on what he can do for Milwaukee.

| Mark DiFelice #45 |
RHP
6-2, 190
Age: 30 |
1-0, 2.84 ERA, 20 K, 4 BB |
Sorgi: After giving up runs in four of his last five relief appearances in his first stint with Milwaukee, he went to the minors, then came back up and dominanted, not giving up a run in his 5 1/3 innings. Again, untested, but potential there.
Welter: Be prepared to pitch a lot anytime Suppan or Looper have a start this season, and hear a lot of Cheap Trick as you come in from the bullpen. More

Trevor Hoffman #51 |
RHP
6-0, 220
Age: 41 |
3-6, 3.77 ERA, 30 saves |
Sorgi: The game's all-time save leader starts the campaign on the 15-day DL, but when he comes back, he'll be asked to replicate or surpass his 30 saves in 34 opportunities. His 3.77 ERA does scare me, especially comparing the pitcher's heaven of Petco Park vs. the launchpad Miller Park tends to be. Still, there might not be anyone this side of K-Rod I'd ask to come in and mop up this '08 bullpen mess than "Mr. Hell's Bells" himself.
|
| Jorge Julio #50 |
RHP
6-1, 225
Age: 30 |
3-0, 3.60 ERA, 34 K, 19 B |
Sorgi: Another member of a relatively untested staff (except for Hoffman). He was rather ineffective in Cleveland last year, with a 5.60 ERA, but after going to the minors in the Braves' system, he went 3-0 in 12 games with a 0.73 ERA. Which guy shows up in Milwaukee?
Welter: This year's Guillermo Mota? More
|

Seth McClung #73 |
RHP: No. 6 Starter
6-6, 250
Age: 28 |
6-6, 4.02 ERA, 87 K, 55 B |
Sorgi: McClung comes into the '09 season after a more-than-solid second half of September, with just one earned run given up in 14 1/3 innings (including playoffs). That has helped bring him into the conversation for a regular starting gig.
Welter: Will have to keep the Crew in a lot of 8-7 ballgames. More
|
| David Riske #54 |
RHP
6-2, 180
Age: 32 |
1-2, 5.31 ERA, 27 K, 25 BB |
Sorgi: He's not overpowering, with just 25 strikeouts in 42 innings pitched. He may have needed a break after how his year ended before an elbow injury. He lost one game and blew a save in two of his last six contests. Before then, he didn't give up a run in 12 of 13 outings, so we know he has the ability to do the job Milwaukee's asking of him.
Welter: He's still on the roster, so now sounds like a good time to earn that paycheck. More
|
| Mitch Stetter #57 |
LHP
6-4, 200
Age: 28 |
3-1, 3.20 ERA, 31 K, 19 BB |
Ganzer: If Stetter can keep his overall number of walks down, the lefty could be a key in setting up Hoffman.
Sorgi: He's now the Brewers' designated (and only) left-handed bullpen artist. He backed up Brian Shouse in that role, but now he'll be asked to do more than just the one-inning-or-less outings that were his modus operandi in each outing after July 6th.
|

Carlos Villanueva #12 |
RHP
6-2, 215
Age: 25 |
4-7, 4.07 ERA, 93 K, 30 BB |
Sorgi: A three-to-one strikeout-to-walk ratio is usually a good thing for someone designated to be the team's closer (until Trevor Hoffman gets healthy). Releagted to the bullpen, he held 11 leads and went 2-2 with a save in 38 straight relief appearances (61 1/3 innings). Don't be surprised if he plays other roles, perhaps a set-up guy, perhaps a spot starter, if he performs even better than that.
Welter: Keep Trevor Hoffman's seat warm. More
