Brewers Sign Looper

By By Dan O'Donnell

The Milwaukee Brewers have reached an agreement on a one-year contract with free agent pitcher Braden Looper.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Looper is expected to make somewhere near the $5.5 million he made pitching for the St. Louis Cardinals last season.

Looper, 34, went 12-14 with a 4.16 ERA in 33 starts for the Cardinals in 2008, and his 199 innings pitched would have led the Brewers.

The deal is pending a physical, but Brewers general manager Doug Melvin told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Monday that he was "optimistic" that it would be finalized by the end of the week.
