Ump Works 4,000th Game
MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Umpire Joe West worked his 4,000th major league game Thursday when the Washington Nationals played the Milwaukee Brewers, becoming the 19th man to reach the milestone.
West worked his first game in 1976 when he was 23 and later was out of the game for two years in a contract dispute with baseball.
He says he was fortunate to work so much before he came up to the majors to help accelerate his career.
