Melvin: CC-Like Difference-Maker Not Available in Trade This Year
By Jay Sorgi
Last year, the Milwaukee Brewers made a trade in July that proved to be the key in their 2008 postseason run, a deal which brought ace pitcher CC Sabathia to Milwaukee.
This year, Melvin admits that a player of that caliber which can help Milwaukee in such a way just isn't out there.
"That kind of guy is not available this year," said Melvin on 620WTMJ's "Wisconsin's Morning News."
"You'd like to add some depth, because there's a lot of baseball season to go, but this time there's not a lot of movement and available players. It doesn't appear that there's anybody that's available that are difference makers at this point. We're always looking to see if we can add depth at this point in the season in case of injury."
According to Melvin, there's about 10 teams out there the Brewers actually have a chance to do something with this year before the trade deadline.
"We take a look at all 29 ball clubs," explains Melvin.
"We see the fit, what we're looking for. We see what those clubs may be working for. You don't want to give up someone off your major league club. You can eliminate about 20 ball clubs when you really sit down with it. You focus on the 3 or 4 clubs you feel might be a match there."
