Sat. Final: No. 16 Virginia 76, MU Women 71

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Monica Wright scored 29 points and helped No. 16 Virginia survive a second-half scare Saturday night to beat Marquette 76-71.

Whitney Edwards added 15 points for Virginia (5-1), which won its third straight game.

The Golden Eagles (5-1) lost for the first time in 11 games dating back to the end of last season, when they won their first WNIT Championship.

Angel Robinson led Marquette with 25 points and Krystal Ellis added 23.

The Golden Eagles seemed in control when they led 53-39 after a 3-pointer by Ellis. But the Cavaliers stormed back to take the lead at 65-64 on a basket by Wright with 2:14 remaining.

Wright also hit two free throws with 34.9 seconds left for a 71-66 lead and the Cavaliers hung on to win.

Jocelyn Mellen, who hurt her left knee in Marquette's 80-77 win Friday night over Gonzaga, will miss the rest of the season with a ligament injury.
