SPASH stays unbeaten in bid for 6th softball title
MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Stacey Tuskowski allowed two hits in six scoreless innings and Katie Krueger and Emily Haluska each had three hits and two RBIs to lead unbeaten Stevens Point to an 8-1 victory over Oak Creek in Division 1 quarterfinals of the state softball tournament today.
Tuskowski struck out four and didn't walk a batter as SPASH (24-0) opened its bid for a record-tying sixth championship in its 11th trip to state.
The start was delayed four hours by rain, and Division 1 semifinals didn't get under way until tonight at about 9 p.m.
SPASH advanced to play Wausau West (16-7), which scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat Mequon Homestead 6-5.
Miranda Spangberg was the only player on either team with multiple RBIs, and her sacrifice fly with the bases loaded and one out brought in the winning run.
Homestead (14-9) lost for the eighth straight time at state.
In the other bracket, Verona beat Middleton 1-0 in a battle of Madison-area teams, and Hartland Arrowhead beat Appleton East 4-1.
Beverly Nordin threw a 3-hitter and struck out eight for Verona (16-5).
Ashley Wagner was the tough-luck loser for Middleton (17-7). She gave up only two hits, and the game's only run was unearned in the first inning.
Kelsey VanDerWeele's 2-run single capped a 3-run fifth inning for Arrowhead (19-5).
Beth Spoehr was the hard-luck loser for Appleton East (19-6), despite striking out nine and not allowing an earned run.
