Ahman Green Leaves Packers for Texans

By Erin Drew Kent

MILWAUKEE - Did the Packers fumble a chance at keeping a proven running back? Green Bay offered less, Houston offered more and Green is now gone. Ahman Green is 30 years old, and apparently the Packers did not feel he was worth this kind of a deal. The Journal Sentinel reports Green signed for four years and $23 million, $6.5 million guaranteed. Green will hold a news conference in Houston Monday. Even before he officially signed Green seemed excited about Houston. He spoke with reporters Sunday morning and had many positive things to say about the Texans. "A good overwhelming feeling, some of the things I'm looking for.. family atmosphere, this organization is making the right moves," Green said. "All I've seen is good - the people, the neighborhoods, the weather." Green played seven seasons in Green Bay and is the Packers' second all-time leading rusher, just 45 yards shy of Jim Taylor's record. He ran for 1,059 yards last season but missed two games with an injury. He also tore his quadriceps in 2005 and was out for 11 games. "When you're a kid and you transfer schools, it's hard to leave your buddies, whether it was good or bad. It's a tough time to leave," Green said Sunday as he was asked about the prospect of leaving Green Bay.. Green will be reunited with former Packers coach Mike Sherman in Houston, as well as former teammates Samkon Gado and Mike Flanagan. Green was a fan favorite. In fact, he was scheduled to be at next week's Fanfeset in Green Bay. Fan reaction ranged from disbelief, to anger, to "what now?" "Money ain't everything," said Kennedy Reskin, who doesn't like the move. Another fan said, "He needs to stay with Green Bay because Ahman Green is Green Bay." "We'll see who we can get to replace him," a third fan said. "If we get Randy Moss, maybe we won't have to worry about the running game so much." With Green out, the Packers were left with Vernand Morency, an inexperienced but quick back who was obtained for Samkon Gado in a trade with the Texans last season. Morency gained 434 yards on 96 carries last season.
