Bradley Tech Players React to BrawlBy David Marcus

MILWAUKEE - The Trojans of Bradley Tech were practicing Wednesday night, back on the court for the first time since Tuesday's big brawl after the win over Bay View. No one felt worse about the fight than the Trojans themselves, said their coach, Gary DePerry. And because of this incident, they've more or less lost their home court advantage, along with the Bay View Redcats after the restrictions mps has imposed on the distribution of tickets to both Tech and Bay View home games. Before practice, TODAY’S TMJ4 sports anchor David Marcus spoke with Tech’s coach and some of the players. “I haven’t even really thought much about it because, you know, I’m more concerned about our boys and how they’re responding after a victory, which many people don’t even know they won a basketball game,” said Coach DePerry. “They’re the kids that should be getting the credit. They played one heck of a ball game.” One player thought a big brawl at a Pistons-Pacers NBA game last season influenced sports violence here. “I think when the NBA, when they had that fight, I think that set the tone, like, so kids want to be like NBA players, their role models,” said Bradley Tech guard Desmond Staten. “So, I think they feed off that sometimes.” Players said the restrictions on ticket sales unjustly hurt their teams. “We should be able to go to a game and sit down and watch a good basketball game,” said Anthony Hill, Bradley Tech center. “After that, we shouldn’t have fights like that, you know, it just embarrasses both programs. So I don’t think it’s fair at all.” “Without the fans, the game is not exciting,” said Staten. “We like big games (when) the fans are all into the game. It keeps us playing hard and up tempo.” DePerry said as soon as the game was over he shook hands with the Bay View coaching staff and sprinted to the locker room. He said his players quickly followed. “Nobody basketball-related saw anything,” said Coach DePerry. “I kind of gave a ‘Good job,’ to our crowd, but I wasn’t trying to incite our crowd in any way. “I had our entire team in our locker room along with a bunch of the JV guys,” DePerry said. “A couple of my staff members said, ‘Hey Coach, there’s something going on inside.’ And I said, ‘Well, we’re staying right here. I’ll address the boys right here.’” DePerry said for safety and security reasons his players stayed inside their locker room during the fight. DePerry added that the game was well played by both teams and praised Bay View for its team’s talent. |
