'09 Brewers: The Outfielders

By By Jay Sorgi

Next game: Wednesday, April 8th at San Francisco
Brewers Gameday with the Jockey Pregame Show at 8:30 p.m. on Newsradio 620 WTMJ

The Milwaukee Brewers' outfield for 2009 includes an MVP candidate, a big-salaried veteran, and a basketball small forward-sized question mark in the starting lineup.

Ryan Braun proved he belongs among the best in baseball with a most valuable player-like 2008 campaign.

Mike Cameron gives critical leadership in the clubhouse and a penchant for plays in center field.

Corey Hart brings all the promise in the world and all the catcalls from a horrific last few weeks of the '08 season if he can't turn things around.

Player Vitals 2008 Synopsis
Ryan Braun. | Photo: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
Ryan Braun #8
Left Fielder
Bats R,
Throws R
6-1, 200
Age: 25
..285, 37 HR, 106 RBI, .335 OBP, .553 SLG

Sorgi: Braun is on the cusp of reaching Albert Pujols-level production.  His average and slugging percentage actually dropped from '07 to '08, but when you hit home runs that put the Brewers into the playoffs, those stats can be forgiven.  An improvement over '08 could garner Braun NL MVP hardware.  It may be necessary to garner an '09 Brewers postseason berth.

Welter: I have this feeling he will start slow, but finish the season with chants of MVP.  More

Mike Cameron #25

Center Fielder
Bats R,
Throws R
6-2, 2-0
Age: 36

.331, 25 HR, 70 RBI, .331 OBP, .477 SLG

Sorgi: A locker room leader, he'll have to play a leadership role on the field to help Milwaukee explode for big runs.  His huge problem is being strikeout-prone, average more than a K per game for seven of his last eight campaigns.

Welter: Cut down on the strikeouts!   More

Chris Duffy #16 Center Fielder
Bats L,
Throws L
5-9, 195
Age: 28
('07 with Pittsburgh):
.249 OBP, 3 HR, 22 RBI, .313 OBP, .367 SLG

Sorgi: Coming off shoulder surgery, Duffy has risen from a non-roster player spot in camp to the de-facto replacement for Tony Gwynn, Jr.  He has some wheels (26 SB in 84 games for Pittsburgh in 2006), so he could be an off-the-bench sparkplug.

Welter: If Gabe Kapler can do it, so can you.  More

Corey Hart. | Photo: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
Corey Hart #1
Right Fielder
Bats R,
Throws R
6-6, 220
Age: 27
.268, 20 HR, 81 RBI, .300 OBP, .459 SLG

Sorgi: The last time Hart sniffed .300 during the '08 campaign was June 12th.  Iin the previous 14 games before that day, he only had 4 K's.   Compare that to the end of the year: 15 K's in his last 13 games.  An amazingly talented player must change that up to get the boo birds off him.

Welter: Shake off how last season ended and produce a full season of tearing the cover off the ball.  More

Brad Nelson. | Photo: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
Brad Nelson #27
Utility (1st, LF, RF)
Bats L,
Throws R
6-2, 255
Age: 26
.286, 0 HR, 0 RBI, .375 OBP, .571 SLG

Ganzer: Look for a breakout season at the plate for Nelson, as the Emmetsburg, IA native will add support off the bench.

Welter: Finally arrive in the show.  Now hit some home runs.  More
