Sun. Final: UW 54, Penn State 44
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -- Marcus Landry scored 13 points, Jon Leuer added 12 and Wisconsin's tough defense harassed Penn State into 0-for-14 shooting from 3-point range in a 54-44 victory Sunday.
Forwards Landry and Leuer did just enough around the bucket for Wisconsin (14-9, 5-6 Big Ten) to win its second straight. They made their shots in the lane before an open Jason Bohannon hit a key 3 from the left corner to give the Badgers a 43-34 lead with five-plus minutes left.
Bohannon finished with eight.
High-scoring Penn State guard Talor Battle was held to 10 points, more than eight below his Big Ten-leading scoring average entering the game.
Battle shot 4-for-15, including six misses from 3-point range.
The Badgers' swarming defense frustrated Penn State (17-7, 6-5) on the perimeter, but the Nittany Lions also failed to capitalize on open looks.
Penn State has lost two straight since upsetting Michigan State last week.
Wisconsin's two consecutive wins have come with Leuer in the starting lineup in place of the injured Keaton Nankivil (ankle). The Badgers had lost six straight before their modest win streak.
The Badgers succeeded with their trademark toughness and tight defense, especially by point guard Trevon Hughes on Battle. Instead of his usual smile, Battle hung his head and smirked in frustration much of the afternoon.
Two foul shots by David Jackson brought Penn State within 43-38 with 3:36 left before Hughes hit a short jumper. Then, Bohannon tipped away an entry pass attempt by Danny Morrissey and found Joe Krabbenhoft on the break for a layup to put the Badgers back up by nine with 2:11 left.
Stanley Pringle, Battle's backcourt running mate, finished with a team-high 11 points on 4-of-10 shooting. Jamelle Cornley, the third member of Penn State's high-scoring trio with Battle and Pringle, was held to four points on 2-of-7 shooting, but grabbed nine rebounds.
The loss disappointed the 14,600-plus fans who showed up at the Jordan Center -- Penn State's largest crowd of the season.
Krabbenhoft added 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds for the Badgers.
