Packers To Interview Capers

By By Jay Sorgi

A coach who lost an NFC Championship Game to the Packers in January 1997 may find himself hired by the team in January 2009.

Perhaps ironically on NFC Championship weekend, multiple sources report that current New England Patriots special assistant/secondary coach Dom Capers is interviewing with Packers coach Mike McCarthy for the defensive coordinator's position this weekend.

Capers was the head coach of the Carolina Panthers when they lost to the Green Bay Packers in the 1996 NFC Championship Game.  He's also been the head coach of the Houston Texans.

It would be a step up from not only Capers' current position, but a job as defensive backs coach for the Denver Broncos, who hired Mike Nolan as the defensive coordinator there. Nolan was reportedly the top candidate for the same position Capers will interview for in Green Bay.

The Packers have reportedly interviewed former St. Louis Rams and New Orleans Saints head coach Jim Haslett for the position as well.
