Milwaukee's Best Head To Madison

By Lance Allan

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- If everything goes according to plan for Milwaukee King and Milwaukee Vincent, they'll be able to settle things once and for all in Saturday's championship game of the state girls high school basketball tournament. King (21-2) and Vincent (21-1) split their two meetings this season and had to share the City Conference title. Now both are headed to the W-I-A-A tournament that begins play with quarterfinals Thursday. After top-ranked DePere fell in the regional semifinals, the two highly rated Milwaukee schools are among the favorites to take the Division One title. It's the first trip to state for Vincent, which faces Antigo (22-2) on Thursday. And it's something of a bittersweet achievement, as the Lady Vikings will have to go without former coach Chris Griffin -- who helped build the program but died of a heart attack just over a year ago. After beating King earlier in the season, Vincent lost to the Lady Generals in their regular season finale. New coach Marquis Hines says that loss is getting his team refocused for the state meet. Vincent is led by junior guard Teri Stamps, who averages almost 17 points a game. King, which faces La Crosse Logan (21-3) on Thursday, brings its own star power in the form of sophomore guard Rachel Story, who played for Vincent last year before transferring. In other Division One quarterfinals on Thursday, Merrill (20-3) faces Milton (17-6) and Sheboygan North (21-2) plays Franklin (20-3). In Division Three games on Thursday, Amherst (23-2) plays Osseo-Fairchild (24-1) and Cuba City (24-0) faces Oostburg (25-0). On Friday, Neillsville (22-2) plays New London (23-2) and Greendale (22-2) faces Grafton (21-3) in the Division Two semifinals. In Division Four, Wausau Newman Catholic (20-4) plays Flambeau (24-1) and Barneveld (22-3) faces Burlington Catholic Central (23-2). All four championships are Saturday.
