Jake's Journal: Wisconsin Olympic Athletes

By Katie DeLong

The Olympics were filled with big moments for Wisconsin athletes. They shined on the world’s biggest stage. This has to be the best moment of the Olympics: Fox Point’s Garrett Weber-Gale, going crazy on Michael Phelps when the men won gold in the 4x100 freestyle relay. Weber-Gale won a second gold in the 4x100 medley relay. Marquette grad Dwyane Wade and the Redeem Team also won gold. Bucks star Michael Redd made a solid contribution to that effort. Chellsie Memmel fought through a broken ankle to help clinch a silver medal in the gymnastics team event. Kate Markgraf of Whitefish Bay and Lindsay Tarpley of Madison helped the women’s soccer team claim a gold. Mequon native Beezie Madden won a gold and a bronze in equestrian events. Laura Kraut of Oconomowoc also won gold in equestrian. Beau Hoopman of Plymouth brought home a bronze medal in men’s eight rowing. The biggest heartbreak of the games: wrestler Ben Askren of Hartland-Arrowhead, who broke down in tears after failing to make it into the medal round. The other big heartbreak: gymnasts Paul and Morgan Hamm, both knocked out by injuries before the games even began.
