Journal Sentinel's Gary D'Amato Discusses Silk Market
By Katie DeLong
BEIJING – Journal Sentinel columnist Gary D’Amato is in Beijing for the Olympics. When he’s not watching the U.S. men’s basketball team crush Germany by almost 50 points, he’s hitting the gift shops. Here’s a little of what he had to say about shopping in Beijing: ”Well, I went to the silk market yesterday, and I’d kind of describe it as a cross between 7 Mile Fair and the bar scene in Star Wars. It’s just an incredible place. One-thousand five hundred shops on six stories. You can buy just about anything there, but it's all knock off. It's all very cheap,” D’Amato said.
