Jake's Journal: Ben Askren

By Katie DeLong

HARTLAND – Wrestler Ben Askren is from Arrowhead High School…and is a first time Olympian. To say he’s confident, is an understatement. Askren is confident. Very confident. “I’m going to win gold. Some people don’t want to say that, because it’s not 100 percent sure, but in my mind, it is,” Askren said. Askren will wrestle in the 163 pound weight class. “We’re incredibly proud. It’s hard to say it without crying. He talked about it for a long time. It’s unbelievable that it’s really coming true,” Michelle Askren said. Askren’s family and friends got together the day before he left for Beijing. He will have over 30 people cheering for him in the stands. They sold T-shirts saying “Putting the Chin in China,” a reference to Askren’s chiseled jaw. No matter what, Askren is the kind of person who will soak up this experience, and maybe, just maybe, he’ll come home with that gold medal. “I can’t even imagine that,” Chuck Askren said, wiping away tears. “It’s been a really great ride.” Askren’s Olympic experience will be quick. His first match is at about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Milwaukee time. If he gets to the gold medal match, it’ll happen Thursday morning.
