Jake's Journal: Beezie Madden

By Katie DeLong

MEQUON - Beezie Madden is not your typical Olympian. She's one of the oldest athletes in Beijing…and her teammate has four legs! But Madden is hoping to ride her way to a medal. Mequon native Madden has tasted Olympic gold before. She and her horse Authentic won a team gold in Athens four years ago. Her parents still live in Mequon. "We burst with pride about her I guess." Madden's been riding since she was a kid. Authentic is a critical part of the team. “When you have an animal involved it’s different than just a person who relies on themselves." At the age of 44, Madden is one of the oldest athletes competing in the Olympics, but her dad says that's actually an advantage. "Age is not a big factor. In fact, experience, which comes with age, probably means more." Mom and dad were in Athens when Madden won her first gold, but this time, they're staying home. “I've been telling people I’ll be watching it on TV and eating Chinese food,” Madden began her Olympic competition Thursday night with the preliminary rounds of "show jumping."
