Jake's Journal: Chellsie Memmel
By Katie DeLong
In Jake’s Journal: it’s a story of determination from an Olympic gymnast from West Allis. Chellsie Memmel's career has been filled with highs and lows, but now she's in the Olympic spotlight. An injury caused Memmel to miss the Olympics in 2004, but she didn't give up. She trained for four more years, and made the U.S. Olympic Team this year. “It makes me think it was all worth it, coming back from the injuries,” Memmel said. And come back she did. Memmel won the World Championship in 2005. So she got a tattoo on her foot to inspire her. “I look down and it reminds me of 2005,” Memmel said. Now that she's in Beijing, Memmel realizes it's all worth it. “What I’ve gone through to realize the dream, it's possible to come back to realize the dream,” Memmel said. Memmel fell in her only individual event: the uneven bars. However, she still gets to compete in the team competition on Wednesday. So she still has one more shot at Olympic gold.
