Police to Shooter of 12-Year-Old: "We're Going To Stop You"

MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee Police are sending a message to the person who put a 12-year-old girl in the hospital with multiple gunshots.

"We're going to stop you. We're going to be in your face. The goal is to stop the violence," said Milwaukee Police Chief Edward Flynn.

Someone shot her several times while she was in her front yard.  She should survive.

Police investigators believe it was an act of intimidation.

Someone shot and killed the girl's cousin, Dante Dyson, last November outside the family's home as he tried to run away from an armed robber.

His alleged killer's trial will happen in September, and police believe the suspect who shot the girl may have been trying to send the family a message about testifying at the trial.

"I don't know if these stoned coward nitwits thought they were going to shoot a 12-year-old girl, if they thought they were intimidating a family from testifying... I don't know what they thought. But enough is enough," said Flynn.

Flynn said from now on, extra officers will operate on patrol in the neighborhood.

Police said the shooter fired from a vacant lot across the street.

The shooter wore dark clothing and a mask. Police believe he drove away in a dark colored Dodge Intrepid with four doors and tinted windows.

Family Struggles with Shooting

"If it wasn't for God, where she was struck at, it would have been fatal," said Monica Dyson, the girl's cousin.

The girl's family tells TODAY'S TMJ4 she is resting and will be OK, but said that doesn't make what happened any easier to deal with.

"I watched my niece last night. I couldn't help her. I couldn't help her," the girl's aunt, Anita Dyson said.

The family hopes that a greater police presence will keep another family from going through the pain they're trying to handle.

"I just pray that God seeks justice for us," said Monica.
