Hundreds Deal With Post-Storm Sewer Backups

  • Print

MILWAUKEE - Storms caused serious problems throughout southeastern Wisconsin, especially for people who have discovered flooding in their basements.

Torrential rains left many homeowners like Joe Brandt with basements full of water, and a big clean-up ahead.

Brandt, who is from Milwaukee, is angry.

For the second time in 13 months, he's had sewage flowing into his basement.

He was in the process of rebuilding after the last flood.

Now, he has soggy carpets, ruined drywall and human waste on the floor.

The same predicament happened to many of his neighbors as well.

"It shouldn't be right for the City of Milwaukee (and) MMSD (the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District) to use our basement as an overflow pool for human excrement."

The city says 371 homes had sewer backups.

An online reporting site has been set up for homeowners in Milwaukee to make claims.

People can make claims with their own municipality and with MMSD.
