New DUI Law Starts Thursday
MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Wisconsin's drunken driving law gets tougher starting Thursday.
The new law taking effect that day means that fourth offense drunken driving offenses will be a felony if they occur within five years of the previous offense.
A first offense will be a misdemeanor if someone younger than 16 is in the car. Currently, Wisconsin is the only state where a first time offender is treated like a traffic violation and not a crime.
Under the new law, repeat offenders and first-timers with high blood alcohol contents must get ignition interlocks.
But the law does not legalize roadside sobriety checkpoints, something that advocates had called for the crack down on drunken driving.
