Celebrations Leave Parks Trashed

MILWAUKEE - Damen Olds found every trash bin overflowing when he arrived to set up for his family's memorial day barbecue at Lincoln Park.

"Pretty filthy," he said.  "Trash left all around the place."

Trash cans were also filled to the brim at Bay View Park on the south side.

"Trash is on the floor, grass, not in the place where it should be," said Noe Marquez, who was at the park with his family.

Milwaukee County Parks Department worker Joyce Owens said it is difficult to keep up with the messes people leave behind.

"It's been garbage cans flipped over. Just horrible," she told TODAY'S TMJ4 reporter Tom Murray. "We're kind of understaffed."

The parks department does not have its full complement of seasonal workers, yet.

"There's a plan to put more bodies in," said County Executive Scott Walker. "They weren't able to fully enact that this weekend, but they'll have definitely have more going into the summer."

Parks Director Sue Black said all staff on duty Monday are assigned to cleaning up after the busy holiday weekend.
