Milwaukee Heat Brings Health Dangers

  • Print

MILWAUKEE - The recent stretch of hot weather in Milwaukee is a reminder for people to stay safe in the heat.

Although the sun feels great to many people, it can be dangerous, especially for elderly people and children.

"This is our first beach experience," said Jamie Klenz.  She and her 10-month-old daughter Riley are spending their first summer together.

"90 degrees right away has been a little shocking, but we'll get used to it."

James has enjoyed the recent stretch of hot, humid weather, but she worries about Riley getting too warm in the blistering sun.

"You just have to make sure you get shade, and don't stay out too long."

Dr. Robert Pachner says everyone should be careful this time of year, because heat-related illnesses are more common than you may think.

"It can happen to anybody," said Pachner.

He says it's best to stay hydrated, wear lightweight clothing and never leave a child or pet in a vehicle, even with a window cracked.

He also suggested to watch for signs and symptoms of heat stroke.

"The big one to watch out for, of course, is an altered mental state, or that feeling (that) you're kind of having trouble thinking.  That's a big one."

Doctors add that if you or your kids start to feel the slightest bit faint, you should get into the shade and drink plenty of fluids.
