Regular Folks: Unusual Sports

Milwaukee area bustling with non-traditional sports

"I was actually playing with my moms knitting needles and i almost poked my brothers eye out," says 11-yard old Julia Albornoz-Williams. "And my mom said who wants to do fencing? I said I do.. she signed me up for fencing and I love it."

"I just wanted to do an interesting sport," says 9-year old Ray Oechler. "Everyone does soccer, basketball, football, all the normal stuff, i want to do something different.

Another unusual sport is cricket.

The Milwaukee Cricket Club can be seen practicing and playing at Lincoln Park. People often drive by and try to figure it out.

"We just hope they don't get into an accident because they're like what's going on?" says Muhammad Naeem of the Milwaukee Cricket Club.

It's a very international game.

"Australia, England, South Africa, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh," says Omar Mansoor of the Milwaukee Cricket Club.

bviously you've got the romance and allure of the swordsmanship- you see the old movies, zoro growing up as a kid," says David Neevel of the Caliburn Fencing Club.

The pitcher- called a bowler- uses a rolling arm to send the ball to the batsman. It's a little bit like baseball but not exactly.

"In baseball when you hit a ball you're supposed to run, in cricket you don't have to run if you don't want to," says Mansoor. "Every bowler gets 6 balls per over. Every time you cross toward the other side it's 1 run. There's a boundary line, if it rolls over it's 4 runs, beyond the line is 6 runs."

I even gave it a shot and it was great fun. The Milwaukee Club has been around since the 1940's.

"We compete in the midwest cricket conference," says Naeem. "42 teams and 2 divisions."

A little further north you'll find North America's largest hurling club at Brown Deer Park.

They're also the only co-ed hurling club in the world. Is this kind of a hidden secret of Milwaukee?

"Yes.. people say lakefront? was that you?" says Cory Johnson. "When we say hey hurling club they don't think curling anymore."

Hurling is the national sport of Ireland and has been around for over 2,500 years.

Anywhere the ball is try to get it up into your hands," says Dave Olson. "You can't pick it up off the ground- you gotta ball lift it. I can catch the ball in the air, i can hit the ball out of the air just like in baseball, i can hit it on the ground like in golf."

"It's really fun, it's a lot of movement," says Andrew Fehrenbach. "I love running and playing anything I can just to get out of the house."

"How does it compare to soccer or any other sports you've done in the past? it's more rougher," Michael Fehrenbach says, "but it's more fun."

Hurling... cricket... And fencing.. just three things going on on any given night in Milwaukee.
