Activists in Milwaukee March For Immigration Reform
MILWAUKEE - Thousands marched on Milwaukee's south side Saturday pushing for comprehensive immigration reform and to protest Arizona's tough new law on immigration.
There was a slight distraction at the beginning of the march when a trash fire started in an alley next to the headquarters of Voces de la Frontera Saturday afternoon.
As firefighters put the flames out the march began with thousands chanting and holding signs pushing for comprehensive immigration reform and protest Arizona's tough new law.
The law requires police to question people they have reason to believe are here illegally.
"Resend this unconstitutional law," said Darryl Morin with League of United Latin American Citizens. "It's a denial of civil rights."
The director of Voces de la Frontera, Christine Neumann-Ortiz said, "Stop the unjust deportations that are separating families and criminalizing workers."
Omar Damian Ortega says he was injured on the job, later jailed and now faces deportation. He worries about his wife and three young children.
"Without reform my kids would not be able to go to school here they way they should. We won't be able to live here you know, with legal status, for 15 years if I were to file through my sister."
Voces de la Frontera said they will join Alderman James Witkowiak when he presents a resolution that call for Milwaukee to enact an economic boycott of Arizona based companies. Calls to Witkowiak were not returned.
