Swastika Drawn At UWM Jewish Student Event

MILWAUKEE - Many UWM students are outraged after someone drew a swastika and anti-Israel messages at the site of a Jewish student event.

The Hillel Foundation held a planned event on Thursday to commemorate the founding of Israel. When the students arrived to set up, they found a swastika and anti-Israel messages drawn in chalk on the ground. Jewish students say UWM officials told them they would not erase the writings, because they were legally protected free speech directed at Israel, rather than directed at Jewish students.

The swastika was quickly erased. Many believed UWM officials erased it, but a spokesman for the school says whoever erased it, did it without direction from the school.

Many believed the display was an attempt to intimidate Jewish students.

"I think it's disgusting. I think it should not be allowed. It's just inappropriate. It's a cultural event, and it has nothing to do with politics. We're not here for that today," said Hillel Foundation president Diana Azimov.

The graffiti was signed with the names of a Muslim student organization and SDS (Students for a Democratic Society). SDS was in the news recently for a tuition protest on campus that led to 16 students being arrested.
