Milwaukee Immigration Rally Targets Arizona Law

  • Print

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- A pro-immigration group in Milwaukee is using its annual march this weekend to criticize Arizona's recently enacted immigration law.

Voces de la Frontera has held rallies on May 1 every year since 2006. Its goals are to protect the rights of undocumented workers and to push for laws making it easier for immigrants to become citizens.

Group executive director Christine Neumann-Ortiz says this year's rally takes on added importance because of Arizona's new law. That measure directs police to question people about their immigration status if there's reason to suspect they're illegal.

Neumann-Ortiz says she expects "tens of thousands" of people at Saturday's rally. Rallies in previous years have drawn thousands of marchers.
