Elderly Woman Claims Her Toyota Sped Up, Crashed Into Building
SHEBOYGAN FALLS - It's happened again. This time, apparently, in Wisconsin.
A woman from Sheboygan County was recovering Tuesday after, she claims, her Toyota Camry sped up suddenly and crashed into a building.
Myrna Marsellie, of Kohler, says she understands why people may be skeptical.
In fact, she says she's been skeptical of the Toyota crash stories too, until it happened to her.
Her 2009 Camry sped forward when she was trying to park near the YMCA in Sheboygan Falls.
"The vehicle accelerated rapidly without any action on her part, jumped the curb and then struck the YMCA building," said Sheboygan Falls Police Chief Steve Riffel.
Marsellie, who's 76, cracked her sternum and tells me she thought she was going to die.
She didn't want to talk on tape because she wasn't feeling well, but she explained that witnesses noticed her brake lights were on when the car drove into the building.
Chief Riffel says they are looking into it.
"We do have witnesses that we talked to. We are also checking into surveillance video of the parking lot to see if that would shed some light on the subject, but from all accounts, we've impounded the vehicle and we are pursuing an inspection of the vehicle to see if that can give us more information."
The car has been impounded and will be inspected.
Myrna explains that the car had already received the recall fix, and now she intends to go after Toyota.
Toyota Safety Quality Communications Manager Brian Lyons says they will investigate the complaint. He says of approximately 1 million recalled vehicles, they have heard 100 claims of sudden acceleration. He adds that those claims are not confirmed.
