Hometown Heroes Family To Appear On Dateline NBC
GRAFTON - A Grafton family who received a total home makeover courtesy of the Hometown Heroes program will appear on Dateline NBC this weekend.
The Longoria family received the major upgrades in 2008. Kapco, Inc. sponsored the project and hundreds of friends and neighbors pitched in to help the Longorias.
At the time, Karen was battling cancer. Two of her teenage triplets use wheelchairs and the home just wasn't accessible.
Today, the family says the home upgrades have changed their life. The doors are wider and hardwood floors help the kids move around the house better. An elevator takes them to the basement where all the necessary physical therapy equipment is set up.
"They're a lot more independent now," Karen says.
A Dateline NBC crew filmed the whole process start to finish. Sunday night they'll air an hour-long special on how a community banded together to help the Longoria family.
Karen says she's nervous to be on national television, but excited to relive the gift all over again.
"Just seeing the surprise on our faces. You re-live it and you think, 'Wow,'" she said.
Karen's cancer is in remission. Her kids' ability to access therapy equipment at home has also helped them remain strong.
